We are thrilled to introduce Dr. YaVonda Ulfig (Vonda), Manager of Communications and Engagement at Illuminate USA, as one of our esteemed speakers. Vonda brings a wealth of experience at the intersection of communication, community engagement, employee experience, and sustainability, and we can’t wait for you to hear her insights.

A Glimpse into Vonda’s World:
Vonda shares her life with her husband, Mark, of over 15 years, and their two children, 12-year-old Urijah and 7-year-old Anyaliese. They reside in Pataskala, Ohio, just east of Columbus. As a proud “Army brat,” Vonda’s childhood was a journey across many states and even countries, having lived in Colorado, New Jersey, South Carolina, Germany, Kentucky, California, Louisiana, and Indiana.
A Career Defined by Connection:
Vonda’s impressive career began as a newspaper reporter covering utilities for three years. She then spent 15 impactful years at American Electric Power, where she excelled in diverse roles spanning corporate communications, leadership and organizational development, diversity and inclusion, stakeholder engagement, and environmental and social justice. Today, she is at the forefront of communication and engagement efforts at the largest single-site solar panel manufacturer in North America, Illuminate USA, helping to shape their internal and external narratives.
Beyond the Professional:
When Vonda isn’t at work, her faith in Jesus Christ is central to her life. She is deeply involved in her church, serving in various ministries, including sharing announcements during Sunday services, singing in the choir, teaching classes, and supporting the marriage ministry. Quality time with her family is also a cherished priority. They enjoy cooking and baking, traveling, going on hikes, playing board games (Scattergories is a favorite!), and cozy movie nights.
Looking Ahead:
In the coming year, Vonda envisions herself continuing to champion efforts that make employees feel seen, supported, and empowered. She is also dedicated to strengthening Illuminate USA’s internal and external communication strategies as the company continues its growth trajectory.
Navigating Challenges with Intention:
Vonda candidly shares that her biggest challenge is balancing her energizing work with family time, ministry commitments, kids’ activities, and nurturing friendships. She has embraced “work-life integration” over “work-life balance,” making intentional choices guided by her values in every season of life.

Inspired by Love and Dedication:
Her parents are Vonda’s lifelong role models, instilling in her the importance of faith, humility, diligence, gratitude, and love. Her husband, a passionate advocate for mental health, also inspires her through his commitment to self-care and compassionate support for others on their healing journeys.
A Guiding Purpose:
Vonda’s number one goal is to create spaces, both professionally and personally, where people feel valued, heard, and connected to a greater purpose.
Excitement for the Future:
Currently, Vonda is most excited about helping to shape the culture and communication of a newer company in the energy space. The opportunity to build something meaningful from the ground up is incredibly rewarding for her.
Gratitude for the Journey:
Vonda expresses immense gratitude for the people in her life – her family, colleagues, and community. They inspire her daily, keep her grounded, and serve as a constant reminder of the profound impact of her work.
