Meet Ann Becker, Vice President, Sustainability, Arizona Public Service. Find out how she went from an environmental attorney to a Vice President at Arizona Public Service, all while raising three children.
Q: Name, title, company
A: Ann Becker, Vice President, Sustainability, Arizona Public Service
Q: Family, hometown, where you live
A: My husband and I are originally from Iowa. Together, we have three grown children. We live in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, near Phoenix and love the Sonoran desert!
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not working? Hobbies?
A: My husband and I love to explore the desert Southwest. We are always on the hunt for old ghost towns, old
mining towns, and anything else showcasing the remarkable history of Arizona. We love to hike in northern
Arizona and southern Utah, and the trip of our lifetime was a recent rafting adventure through the entire
length of the Grand Canyon.
Q: What are you most grateful for?
A: I am most grateful for my husband and my kids. They are everything to me.
Q: What are you most excited about right now?
A: One silver lining of Covid-19 is the awakening and growing recognition that corporate America has a
responsibility not only to its shareholders, but also to its employees and the communities they serve. I’m
excited to think that companies are starting to define success from perspectives other than the bottom line.
As Covid-19 has proven, nonprofits cannot be the only safety net for society.
Q: What is your biggest challenge right now?
A: Our biggest challenge is figuring out how to get from a fossil fuel-fired energy economy to a sustainable,
carbon-free energy economy. It will be a challenge, but we are determined to achieve this goal.
Q: What charity do you support? And why
A: I support Central Arizona Shelter Services, the largest homeless shelter in Arizona, because I believe the
true measure of any society is how it treats its most vulnerable members.
Q: What were your career aspirations in high school? How does that relate to you now?
A: I’ve wanted to be an attorney since 7th grade social studies class, where we had a mock trial. I became an
environmental attorney and practiced for many years. I’m now on the business side of my company, still
using my legal skills but not formally practicing.
Ann Becker will be presenting at The Virtual Power Conference to ADVANCE Women in Utilities.
